Setting up an XRP wallet for the first time can feel daunting, but the process is straightforward when broken into simple steps. This guide walks you through creating a secure XRPL account, backing up your keys, and preparing to receive your first XRP.
Step 1: Choose your wallet. For beginners, Xaman (formerly XUMM) is recommended as it's purpose-built for the XRPL with an intuitive interface. Download it from the official app store (iOS or Android). For maximum security with large amounts, consider a Ledger hardware wallet instead.
Step 2: Create your account. In Xaman, follow the setup wizard to generate a new account. The app will create your XRPL address (starts with 'r') and a secret key. Your address is safe to share for receiving XRP. Your secret key must NEVER be shared with anyone under any circumstances.
Step 3: Secure your backup. Write down your secret key on paper (not digitally) and store it in a secure location like a safe. Consider making multiple copies stored in different physical locations. Losing your secret key means permanently losing access to your XRP with no recovery option.
Step 4: Fund your account. XRPL accounts require a minimum reserve to activate. Send this initial deposit from an exchange or another wallet. Your account becomes active on the ledger once the first transaction is received and confirmed.
Step 5: Set trustlines if needed. To hold XRPL-issued tokens beyond XRP (like RLUSD or airdropped tokens), you need to set trustlines. In Xaman, navigate to the token, tap to add the trustline, and confirm. Each trustline increases your account reserve slightly.
